Getting there
Take Metro Line 2 to Tasqueña, then transfer to the Tren Ligero (light rail) and ride to the Estadio Azteca stop. Rideshare and taxis are widely available, but expect heavy traffic on match days — leave extra time.
About the venue
Opened 1966
Sitting about 2,200 m (7,200 ft) above sea level, the Azteca is the home of Club América and Mexico's national team and the largest stadium in Latin America. It is the only stadium to host matches at three different World Cups (1970, 1986, 2026) and the first to stage two World Cup finals. It witnessed Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" and "Goal of the Century" in 1986. Renovated and rebranded "Estadio Banorte," it hosts the 2026 tournament's opening match.
Fan tips
Arrive early — the area around the stadium gets busy well before kickoff. Carry some cash for street vendors and parking, and bring a layer: evenings at altitude can get cool even when the afternoon is warm.
